So you've burnt your pan? Don't stress! (Even the most experienced chefs have burnt a pan or two in their day). It's not a big deal. The good news is that you haven't ruined your pan because our nöni cookware is built to last!
While marks won’t affect the performance or safety of your cookware, a smooth pan is best to achieve a natural, non-stick surface. Our easy cleaning methods below will help you quickly remove burns, stains, and stubborn residue from your stainless steel pans—bringing them back to their former glory in no time.
Our nöni Range is the best non-toxic stainless steel cookware in Australia and around the globe. Made from high-quality ferritic stainless steel, it's non-nickel and free from PFAS or toxic coatings, ensuring superior performance without harmful chemicals. Our non-teflon cookware is the perfect choice for anyone looking to eliminate toxic synthetic coatings from their home.
Available in our flagship 3mm nöni and 2mm nöni Lightning material (which is 30% lighter), the nöni range is highly conductive and durable. Its non-reactive material is perfect for wet and acidic foods like soups, sauces, and slow-cooked meals. nöni also doesn't require seasoning, which makes it dishwasher-safe and straightforward to maintain.
While ferritic stainless steel may not hold the same flashy finish as common nickel-based stainless steel, it excels in performance, safety, and durability, making it the ultimate healthy, non-toxic cookware choice.
Sticking to a few simple cooking rules can significantly reduce the time and effort you spend on cleaning your pans. Following these guidelines will also make cooking a whole lot easier and ensure you get the best performance out of your cookware.
Always ensure your pan is clean and smooth prior to cooking. Stuck on food can act like velcro and build up over time.
When you gradually heat stainless steel cookware, a scientific principle called the 'Leidenfrost effect' occurs, expanding the metal and shrinking the pores on its surface. This results in a smoother cooking surface that is much less prone to sticking.
Because our cookware is highly conductive, it's important to heat your empty pan on medium heat (or low heat for our nöni Lightning Range). Heating your pan gradually will help prevent food from burning and sticking.
Do a water drop test—add a drop of water, and if it forms a ball and dances, your pan is ready to start cooking.
Add oil once the pan is hot enough, and let the oil heat up before you start cooking.
Cold food, especially meats, can cause sticking. Ideally, allow your ingredients to come to room temperature and pat them dry to remove excess moisture before cooking.
Patience is key when cooking. Please wait until your food naturally releases from the pan before flipping or turning it. This will help improve the flavour and texture of your food and prevent it from sticking, which will make clean-up a lot easier!
Okay, so, unfortunately, you didn't follow points 1 - 4 above. Never fear; a burnt or food-coated stainless steel pan is quite simple to remedy and isn't a major cause for concern.
Important, please avoid:
While our stainless steel range is dishwasher safe, we recommend handwashing for best results and encourage you to thoroughly dry your pans after washing to prevent water spots.
Below are some simple yet effective ways to clean burnt marks off nöni cookware:
For burnt marks, Bar Keeper's Friend is an excellent option for getting your stainless steel cookware back to its pristine, smooth condition.
Alternatively, for a natural solution you can boil vinegar, add baking soda and scrub gently to remove burnt spots and marks.
Have some extra lemons on hand? One of the easiest, most efficient, and natural ways to tackle stuck-on food and burnt marks on stainless steel is to use a simple yet surprisingly effective lemon boiling method.
Simply quarter two or three lemons, place them in your pan, cover with water, and boil for 5-10 minutes. The food residue should start floating to the top, making scrubbing easier. Remove the water and lemons, rinse your pan and use a gentle scrubbing pad or brush to remove any leftover bits.
Then, simply wash your pan as usual (and remember to dry it thoroughly).
Bonus tip: use our handy Lil' Flippa Tool to dislodge stubborn food residue from the bottom of your pan and speed up the cleaning process.
This method is highly effective and an excellent opportunity to repurpose old, leftover aluminium foil! It's particularly convenient for polishing off burn marks and discolouration from the back of your pan.
Method: Cover the burnt area with 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda, add water to form a paste, and use crumpled foil to scrub the surface gently.
Avoid scrubbing or pressing down on your pan with the foil too harshly (use light circular motions, as if using a washcloth).
Note: You may need to repeat this process if your pan is particularly dirty. Then, simply wash your pan with warm, soapy water and dry it as usual.
This method is excellent for maintaining a smooth surface on your healthy cookware while removing lighter marks. Sprinkle coarse salt on the affected area (about 2-3 tablespoons) and add equal parts cooking oil to roughly combine. Use a dry cloth or paper towel to scrub away any marks, then rinse and dry the pan as usual.
These methods effectively remove lighter marks like chalky white spots off stainless steel and food residue.
