400 Grit Diamond Sharpener Head for Blunt and Damaged Knives

The 400 Grit Diamond Sharpener Head is the coarse stage of the Modüla™ sharpening system from Solidteknics. It is the head for knives that have gone past the point of a quick touch-up: edges that are genuinely blunt, worn down after years of hard use, or damaged. At 400 grit it removes steel efficiently and regrinds the edge to a precise 15 degree bevel on each side, giving the blade fresh edge geometry to work from.

What a 400 Grit Head Is For

Grit describes how coarse or fine a sharpening surface is. Lower numbers remove more metal, more quickly. The 400 grit head is the coarsest in the Modüla™ range and is built for restorative work rather than routine upkeep:

  • Regrinding genuinely blunt edges that no longer bite into food
  • Restoring worn edges on knives that have been used hard for a long time
  • Reworking damaged edges back to a clean, even bevel
  • Setting a precise 15 degree bevel on each side of the blade

Because it works quickly, it is not the head for everyday maintenance. Once an edge is back in shape, the 1000 grit and 2000 grit heads look after regular sharpening and touch-ups.

How It Works

Every Modüla™ sharpener head is a one-piece pass-through sharpener made from spring steel with an industrial diamond coating. Its flexible fingers hold the sharpening angle for you, so there is no guessing and no balancing a blade against a stone.

  • Rock, don't drag: draw the knife through the channel with a gentle rocking motion
  • Sharpen: apply firmer pressure deeper in the channel to engage the diamonds
  • Hone: use lighter strokes at the smooth top section of the head

Sharpening and honing happen in the one head, so there is no second tool to reach for. Because the flexible fingers set the 15 degree angle, a regrind that would normally take practice on a stone becomes a controlled, repeatable job.

Designed to Work With the Trilobite™

The 400 Grit Diamond Sharpener Head is designed to work as a system with the Trilobite™ Sharpener Mount. The Trilobite™ is a free-standing aluminium mount that holds one head at a time. It sits on the bench without being attached to anything, so there are no screws to fit and no DIY. Swap heads in and out as the job changes.

If you would rather, the head can also be mounted to the screws on the edge of a Modüla™ bamboo knife board, or to any screw head standing proud of a flat, solid surface.

Compatibility

  • Suits double-edged (double-bevel) Western knives, not only Modüla™ blades
  • Not suitable for single-bevel knives, including the Söliditi™ range
  • Not suitable for serrated edges, including the Modüla™ 23cm Bread Knife

Where It Fits in the Modüla™ System

The Modüla™ sharpening system uses three interchangeable diamond heads, so you match the head to the condition of the blade instead of owning three different kinds of sharpener:

  • 400 grit, coarse: regrinds blunt, worn or damaged edges to a 15 degree bevel each side
  • 1000 grit, medium: reconditions a dull blade at a 20 degree bevel each side
  • 2000 grit, fine: keeps an already sharp edge razor sharp with a quick touch-up at 20 degrees each side

Add the 400 grit head on its own to bring restorative sharpening into an existing setup, or choose the complete Modüla™ Sharpening System, which includes all three heads and the Trilobite™ mount.

Care

  • Wipe clean after use with a dry cloth or soft brush to remove any residue
  • No oil or water needed: unlike a whetstone, the diamond coating works best dry
  • Store in a dry place, such as a drawer, when not mounted

Who It Suits

The 400 grit head suits cooks with a favourite knife that has lost its edge, anyone who has inherited or rescued older double-bevel knives, and households that would rather restore their own blades at home than send them out. For knives that are simply a little dull, start with the 1000 grit head instead.
